The Berserkers, in particular, were eye-catching because they were gigantic and vicious. The group of Uruks was defeated later when they encountered Éomer and the Riders of Rohan. Etymology Saruman used the dark arts to cause the pursuers to feel weary and then used the same dark arts to give more speed to the Uruks. This was proven when Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli pursued a group of Uruks because they kidnapped the hobbits, Pippin and Merry. Saruman's orcs were aided with his dark magic. The vast army marched to Helm's Deep and fought against Rohan's people, who were under the leadership of King Théoden. Other troops were composed of the human enemies of Rohan and the Dunlendings. Most of Saruman's army was composed of the Uruk-hai. They also used their swords that were short and had broad blades instead of the usually curved scimitar that the orcs typically use. They were equipped with great bows constructed from yew wood, and these bows were the same shape and length as real men. ![]() Their gear was also different from what the orcs usually use. ![]() The front of their iron helmets also had an Elf rune molded in white metal. Saruman's Uruks carried the symbol of Saruman on their shield – a small white hand in the middle of a black field. Hybrids have been spotted in Saruman's armies wherein these "half-orcs" had the same height as human men. ![]() There was a theory that the Uruk-hai produced by Saruman was the result of crossbreeding between man and orc. In the later part of the Third Age, the wizard Saruman the White started breeding Uruk-hai in the pits of Isengard using the dark arts. You can identify the Uruks working for Barad-dûr because they use the red Eye of Sauron as a symbol on their shields. This attack also resulted in the downfall of Osgiliath. The Uruks first appeared in history in TA 2475, when they emerged from Mordor and attacked and conquered the region of Ithilien.
